Yesterday at the Morris Park Boxing Club in the Bronx, Joe DeGuardia hosted the gym’s grand re-opening and first annual Holiday Party before a standing room only contingent of gym members (both past and present), press, and members from the surrounding community. The building, which suffered a devastating fire exactly one year ago that left the entire gym
in shambles, has been completely re-done and renovated, thanks to numerous donations from DeGuardia, and a generous donation of equipment by Everlast. The gym is now busier than ever as many of the members are gearing up for this
year’s New York Golden Gloves Tournament, which starts in January.
“It was a great turnout, we couldn’t have been happier,” said DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing and building owner. “It really
shows how important the gym is not to just the members, and the kids who box, but to the entire community. This gym has been here for so many years and has been so important in many of these young youth’s lives. When the fire first
happened not a lot of people thought we could build it back up, but just like a fighter, the gym got knocked down, but it’s back up and fighting harder than ever. We are going to make this an annual thing now and each year we will look
to expand more and more with it. It is our way of giving back to the gym and the community and bringing everyone together around the Holidays.”
Fighters new and old turned out for the opening, included hot food and beverages being served, as well as a Turkey and
Chicken giveaway. Some familiar faces in attendance were former lightweight world champion, Carlos Ortiz, former middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight world champion, Iran Barkley, former light heavyweight world
champion Lou Del Valle, former Morris Park gym owner and operator, Joe DeGuardia Sr., as well as numerous other pro and amateur fighters that have trained or currently are training at the gym.

Almost one year ago to the day, the Bronx’s famous Moris Park Boxing Club, suffered a devastating fire that completely destroyed the entire gym and left nearly 100 Bronx youths without a place to train. Thankfully, after a lot of hard work, and some generous donations from Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing, and a significant donation of equipment made by
Everlast, the gym has re-opened and is busier than ever, with many of the amateur fighters from the gym now gearing up for the 2011 NY Golden Gloves.
On Monday, December 20th at 4PM the gym, along with building owner Joe DeGuardia, gym operator Dex Pejcinovic and a team from Everlast, will host the official grand re-opening/holiday party at the gym. There will be a holiday giveaway, and complimentary food/beverages will be served to gym members, the press and the surrounding community.
“It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, there was practically nothing at all left in the gym other than the charred corner posts
and burned metal frame of the ring. Everything inside was completely destroyed,” said DeGuardia. “Now, exactly one year later, we have a brand new beautiful gym thanks to everyone’s hard work and the donation from Everlast.
Being the fire happened right around Christmas, we felt that it would be a great time to have the grand re-opening and combine it with our first annual Holiday party and giveaway. It is our way of expressing our gratitude that no-one was
injured in the fire and to acknowledge the tremendous community support we have received. We would like everyone from the neighborhood and boxing community to come out and join us at the Morris Park Boxing Club for an enjoyable Holiday
The gym is located at 644 Morris Park Ave in the Bronx, NY. For any questions regarding the event please contact the Star Boxing office at 718-823-2000.
